ICB Syllabus

No prior bookkeeping knowledge is assumed at level II but candidates must have basic numerical skills.

Before commencing the study at level III you should have achieved ICB Level II Certificate in Bookkeeping or its equivalent with another awarding body

Before commencing the study at level IV you should have achieved ICB Level III Certificate in Bookkeeping and Accounting or its equivalent with another awarding body.

Some exams are sat at home and are booked by Kaplan Distance Learning. External exams are booked at Pearson VUE centres.

Level II Certificate in Bookkeeping

Qualifies candidates to carry out the role of an employed assistant bookkeeper under supervision. Leads to Affiliate member of ICB status - AfICB.

Covers basic principles of single and double entry bookkeeping and its application to business in both a manual and a computerised system.

Successful candidates will be able to:

  • Apply postings from the books of prime entry and from source documents to the ledger accounts
  • Produce an initial trial balance
  • Set up a computerised bookkeeping system
  • Enter details of all transactions
  • Produce reports
Level III Certificate in Bookkeeping and Accounts

Qualifies candidates to carry out the role of an employed or self-employed bookkeeper. Leads to Associate member of ICB status - AICB.

Covers preparation of ledger balances, control accounts and reconciliations, adjustments and preparation of final accounts for non-incorporated businesses or organisations.

Successful candidates will be able to:

  • Reconcile bank statements with the ledgers
  • Produce a VAT return
  • Control the sales and purchases ledgers
  • Post year-end adjustments
  • Produce the final accounts for a sole trader, partnership and not-for-profit organisation in both a manual and a computerised system
Level IV Certificate in Advanced Bookkeeping and Accounts

Qualifies candidates to carry out the role of a self-employed bookkeeper/senior employed bookkeeper. Leads to Member of ICB status - MICB.

Covers the production of a set of accounts from incomplete records, advanced partnership accounts and the preparation and interpretation of internal management accounts for incorporated bodies.

Successful candidates will be able to:

  • Carry out the role of an employed or self-employed bookkeeper
  • Produce draft year-end accounts for limited companies and limited liability partnerships in both a manual and computerised system for internal management purposes.
