2010 CIMA Syllabus Changes

As specialists in CIMA success, we have the expertise and skills to support you through the 2010 syllabus change.
- Our pass rates consistently exceed the CIMA national average – and no more so than after a syllabus change
- We are using technology to further enhance the Kaplan learning experience and make it even more accessible for those who struggle to get to a Kaplan centre
- Our market leading TOPCIMA approach gives us the expertise to handle the new Strategic level case study based exam
- We now offer support to help trainees and employers to monitor and complete the new work experience requirements.
What remains the same?
Employers and students will be pleased to know that there are few significant changes and the CIMA syllabus will have:
- The same number of papers
- The same number of qualification but with an extra level (Operational level)
- The same exam sittings
What's new in the syllabus?
1. Paper names are changing but they have similar content
Some topics are moving from one paper to another, leaving some students potentially studying the same subject twice or not at all. Kaplan will cover the gaps in student knowledge so they can pass their papers and also apply the knowledge in the workplace.
2. Introduction of more tax related content to the qualification
CIMA reviewed the tax in the syllabus to enable students to become more knowledgeable and to perform fundamental tax related tasks in the workplace without difficulty.
3. Operational Level
The lower levels of the current Managerial Level have become the Operational Level. On passing this level students are awarded a Diploma in Management Accountancy.
Complete the next three papers and that’s Managerial Level now completed – students will now received an Advanced Diploma in Management Accounting.
4. More consistent testing of core skills in every exam sitting
CIMA have reduced the amount of multiple choice and choice of questions in exams and focus more on more regular testing of core skills that an employer is looking for.
5. Close the gap from Strategic to TOPCIMA
To better prepare students for TOPCIMA and to improve the application of the knowledge and skills they have learned through their studies into the work place, students will now receive pre-seen information about a business prior to the exam. Students will be expected to read through the pre seen, analyse it and be prepared to answer questions about the company involved in each of the Strategic papers they are attempting to that particular sitting.
6. Compulsory completion of the work experience record
As part of the new syllabus CIMA will require students to complete their work experience record, as well as sit the case study exam, in order to successfully pass the TOPCIMA level. The move is to encourage students to become fully qualified and to apply for their full CIMA membership.
