About ACA (ICAEW)

ACA is an internationally recognised business qualification awarded by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW). It provides opportunities in a range of roles including general practice, taxation, insolvency, assurance and management accountancy.

On average, ACA (ICAEW) qualified accountants earn more than other accountants. 49 of the FTSE 100 Finance Directors are ACA qualified.

ACA (ICAEW) at a glance
Course structure: The ACA (ICAEW) syllabus is broken down into two main components:
  • Professional stage
  • Advanced stage
Course completion time: A student commencing studies in September could potentially complete all papers by November two years later.
Examination method:
  • Knowledge phase - 1 ½ hour e-assessment
  • Application phase - 2 ½ hour paper based exam
  • Advanced stage - Technical Integration - 3 ½ hour paper based exam
  • Advanced stage - Advanced case study - 4 hour paper based exam
Teaching methods available:
  • Classroom based
  • Distance Learning (CFAB qualification only)


How to study ACA (ICAEW)

ACA (ICAEW) students are required to become ICAEW members before studying ACA. This involves completing a training agreement and securing relevant accountancy work experience with a firm prior to the course. Individuals will usually be sponsored to study and should speak to your employer about this.

Other prerequisites are:

  • Candiadtes must have a minimum of two A Levels (UCAS Tariff score 220) and three GCSEs (including Maths and English), or
  • AAT qualified

Modules and structure

The ACA (ICAEW) qualifications is split into two stages: Advanced and Professional stage. More information about the course structure is available here.

Exemptions

Exemptions are available for graduates, AAT qualifed students, and those holding some other professional accountancy qualifications.
