Why should my child choose a career in Business or Finance?

  • Qualified accountants have access to a wide range of potentially highly paid career choices and could choose to work anywhere in the world.
  • Accountancy is one of the few professions where the highest ranks can be reached without a university education.
  • All businesses need people with the skills that are developed in an apprenticeship, whether  are in customer service, business administration or accountancy

What is an Apprenticeship?

  • Apprenticeships combine work-based training and qualification-based learning.
  • They are suitable for anyone over the age of 16 who is not a university graduate.
  • The majority of course fees are funded by the Government – although restrictions do apply

Why should my child do an Apprenticeship in business or finance?

  • If your child is keen to pursue a career in business or finance, they can choose an apprenticeship in a range of business disiplinees as accounting as an alternative to a university education
  • By doing an apprenticeship, they will learn the skills necessary to perform their job and at the same time obtain a qualification at the end.
  • Because they will be employed and earning a salary from the start, they will not have the burden of student debt and will still be able to progress to higher level qualifications after their apprenticeship, just as a graduate would.

A Successful Kaplan Scholar
Husnain Husain, 17, Bradford, was one of eleven lucky students who were awarded a Kaplan scholarship worth over £15,000 of professional qualifications, to provide him with the skills for a career in Finance. Working as an apprentice for Morrisons, Husnain chose to study an apprenticeship in AAT and through the scholarship hopes to move on to become a qualified accountant.

‘I chose a Kaplan apprenticeship in AAT as from a young age I developed an ambition to work within the business and finance environments. The apprenticeship scheme meant that I could gain valuable work experience and at the same time earn a living, without getting into debt. By studying an apprenticeship with Kaplan instead of going to university I can quickly progress to complete the relevant qualifications I need to become a chartered Accountant.

The Kaplan scholarship has given me a once in a lifetime opportunity to achieve my lifelong ambition. Which without the funding would not have been possible. The scholarship was something I really wanted; even though I didn’t think I stood a chance, during the interview process I remained determined to win and was overwhelmed when I heard I had been successful.

The communication between Kaplan and its students is excellent, the tutors and assessors at Kaplan care about your progress and support you every step of the way throughout your studies. Many of my colleagues at Morrison’s have studied with Kaplan all of whom highly recommend Kaplan as the best place to study for a career in accountancy.
Kaplan has given me a fantastic start to my career with the support of my employer and Kaplan I will now develop the tools to progress my career in business.’

CV Service
Kaplan offers a CV service which aims to place students looking for apprenticeship with employers who have vacancies. Students can email their CVs to steponup@kaplan.co.uk who will endeavour to help them find a suitable role.

Success stories

Kinga aged 18 from Leeds – “ The Summer School organised by Kaplan Financial was a great experience for me. It gave me an opportunity to learn the basics of accountancy and helped me find out the different and most beneficial routes available to take in order to become a qualified accountant.

There were a variety of tasks included in the Summer School which helped me develop my personal skills such as building my confidence, being able to communicate with others, successfully work within a team and prepare and carry out a presentation in front of an audience. These four days combined learning and having a good time with new people made me realise that accountancy is something I would really love to study.

Tutors were ready to support me with everything I needed to successfully start the qualification. They helped me create a good CV and then search for a suitable job and nearest centre in which I can study.

I started my accountancy qualification a month after the Summer School. I have also managed to find a job with a small accountancy firm as a trainee accountant which enables me to earn while I learn. Now I know what I want to do with my future career therefore not attending the Kaplan Financial Summer School would be the biggest regret of my life."
